Destination Overview
Pahalgam — literally meaning “Village of Shepherds” — is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India, nestled in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir at an altitude of 2,130 metres above sea level. Set on the banks of the sacred Lidder River, this Himalayan paradise has drawn travellers, honeymooners, pilgrims, and adventure seekers for centuries.
The town is the primary base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, one of India’s most significant Hindu pilgrimages, attracting over 500,000 devotees each summer. Beyond religion, Pahalgam offers extraordinary access to Kashmir’s finest trekking trails, alpine meadows, glaciers, and river valleys.
Pahalgam gained global fame partly through Bollywood — Betaab Valley was the shooting location of the 1983 blockbuster film Betaab, and countless films have since been shot among its pine forests and snow-capped backdrops. Today, it remains one of the most visited destinations in Kashmir tourism, welcoming millions of visitors each year.

Pahalgam is surrounded by a constellation of valleys, glaciers, and meadows, each with its own character. Here is a complete guide to the best places to visit in Pahalgam during your Kashmir trip.
📸 Photography Hotspot
Betaab Valley is perhaps the most iconic destination near Pahalgam, located just 15 km from the main town at an altitude of 2,743 metres. Named after the 1983 Sunny Deol blockbuster Betaab, the valley is a sweeping canvas of lush meadows, crystal-clear streams, and dense pine and fir forests framed by permanently snow-dusted peaks.
The valley is a paradise for photographers, nature walkers, and film lovers. A well-maintained path along the river banks makes it accessible for families with children and elderly visitors.
Distance from Pahalgam: 15 km | Best time: April to October
🥾 Trekking Base
Aru Valley is a serene alpine basin 12 km from Pahalgam, sitting at 2,414 metres. Far quieter than Betaab, Aru is the preferred base camp for serious trekkers heading to the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar–Marsar Lakes — two of Kashmir’s most spectacular multi-day treks.
Aru is a working pastoral village, and in summer you will encounter Bakarwal nomadic shepherds with their flocks. Camping under the stars here, with the sound of the Aru stream and distant cowbells, is an unforgettable Kashmir experience.
🙏 Amarnath Yatra Base
Situated 16 km from Pahalgam at an altitude of 2,895 metres, Chandanwari is the official starting point of the sacred Amarnath Yatra. The route from here leads pilgrims through Sheshnag Lake (3,658 m) and Panchtarni before reaching the Holy Amarnath Cave at 3,888 metres.
Even for non-pilgrims, Chandanwari offers a dramatic high-altitude landscape. A famous natural snow bridge forms across the Lidder River here each winter and lasts well into summer, making it a popular spot for snow play, sledding, and photography.
🐴 Mini Switzerland
Baisaran Valley, often called Mini Switzerland of Kashmir, is a stunning high-altitude meadow perched 2,500 metres above Pahalgam town. The valley is famous for its vast open grasslands dotted with dense stands of pine and fir trees, with snow peaks forming a perfect backdrop.
There is no road to Baisaran — it is accessible only by trekking 5 km uphill or riding on a pony. Horse riding from Pahalgam to Baisaran is one of the most popular activities in the region and takes approximately one hour each way.
🌊 River Activity
The Lidder River is the heart and soul of Pahalgam, flowing right through the town after originating from the Kolahoi Glacier and the snowfields of Chandanwari. The glacier-fed river maintains a crystal-clear quality and is one of the best rivers for white-water rafting in Kashmir, particularly between April and June when snowmelt is at its peak.
The river banks provide easy walking trails through forests and villages. The Lidder is also one of the best locations in India for brown trout fishing — a licensed activity managed by the J&K Tourism Development Corporation. Evening riverside picnics and campfires along the Lidder are among the most cherished memories visitors take home.
🏔️ High Altitude Trek
Sheshnag Lake sits at a breathtaking altitude of 3,658 metres on the Amarnath Yatra route, approximately 23 km from Pahalgam via Chandanwari. The lake is surrounded on three sides by towering snow peaks whose reflections in the deep blue glacial waters create an otherworldly panorama.
Reaching Sheshnag requires a full day’s trek from Chandanwari passing through Pissu Top (3,550 m). Camping at Sheshnag on a clear night, with the Milky Way above and the moonlit peaks reflected in the lake, is a transcendent Himalayan experience.
Want to visit all these places? Our 5-day Pahalgam package covers Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, Baisaran, and a Lidder River rafting experience with comfortable hotel stays included.
Activities
Pahalgam is far more than a scenic viewpoint — it is a destination packed with activities for every type of traveller. Here are the best things to do in Pahalgam during your Kashmir holiday.
Pahalgam is the premier trekking base in Kashmir. The trails range from easy meadow walks to demanding high-altitude expeditions. The Kolahoi Glacier Trek (4 days) is considered one of the finest glacier treks in the Western Himalayas. The Tarsar Marsar Trek (6 days) passes twin glacial lakes at 3,800 metres.
River rafting in Pahalgam on the Lidder River is one of the most exhilarating experiences in Kashmir tourism. The rapids range from Grade II to Grade III, suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. The rafting stretch runs approximately 10 km. Best season: April to June.
Horse riding in Pahalgam is a centuries-old tradition and remains the most popular activity for visitors of all ages. Ponies and horses are available for hire throughout the town for rides to Baisaran Valley, Chandanwari, Betaab Valley, and longer mountain trails.
The Lidder River is home to wild brown trout (Salmo trutta), making Pahalgam one of the best trout fishing destinations in India. Fishing permits are issued by the J&K Tourism Development Corporation. The season runs from March to October.
Camping in Pahalgam — particularly in the meadows of Aru Valley and the forests near Betaab Valley — is an unforgettable experience. Several licensed operators offer fully equipped camps with dining tents, sleeping bags rated to sub-zero temperatures, and guided evening walks.
Pahalgam is a photographer’s paradise in every season — the cinematic sweep of Betaab Valley, reflections in Sheshnag Lake, fields of saffron in autumn, and the ice formations at Chandanwari all offer world-class photographic subjects.
